A work permit in Iraq should be considered before a foreign employee begins the proposed assignment. Immigration planning needs to distinguish permission to enter, permission to reside and permission to work. Treating these as one interchangeable document can disrupt mobilisation and expose the employer to compliance problems.
Separate entry, residence and employment permission
The Iraqi Labour Law addresses the employment of foreign workers, while the Foreigners Residence Law governs the residence framework. The Supreme Judicial Council’s discussion of these laws identifies the work permit requirement for foreign workers. Employers should check the current procedure and any applicable exception against the individual assignment.
Terms such as work visa or employment visa in Iraq are often used commercially. The practical question is which documents and approvals the employee needs for the actual activity. An entry permission alone should not be assumed to authorise employment.
Prepare the employer and assignment file
For a foreign employee work permit in Baghdad, establish the employer or host entity, role, work location, intended duration and contractual arrangement. Prepare the corporate records and individual documents requested for the relevant route. Check the spelling of names and passport details consistently across applications and employment records.
Secondments deserve particular attention. Identify which entity directs the work, pays the employee and bears employment obligations. A foreign payroll or short assignment does not remove the need to assess Iraqi requirements.
Manage the assignment after arrival
Keep a secure register of work authorisations, foreign staff residency documents and expiry dates. Set internal renewal reminders early enough to collect updated information and respond to queries. Changes in employer, role, location or passport should trigger a review of whether the existing documents remain appropriate.
Foreign employee immigration in Baghdad should also connect with payroll and social security administration. One department should coordinate the complete file so that travel arrangements do not outrun the compliance process.
Contact Etihad Law before confirming mobilisation. Provide the employee’s nationality, role, location, employer and proposed dates so that work authorisation in Iraq can be assessed alongside entry and residence arrangements. Individual applications remain subject to the competent authorities’ requirements and decisions.
